Destination Plastic Surgery: Travelling For Your Procedures

An interesting and well articulated read on a woman's experience searching for and eventually finding a plastic surgeon who happens to reside on the other side of a few international borders.

In the original article published by the Telegraph, Cheryl Newman details her quest for a breast reduction minus the local price tag. Her search (like most plastic surgery consumers) begins with the internet and ends (perhaps unlike most plastic surgery consumers) with her recovering from the successful surgery in Spain.

A couple of pearls of wisdom extracted from her article regarding foreign plastic surgery services:

  • Do your research. Get recommendations and see several surgeons in consultation before deciding.
  • Don't just go with the first doctor you see. Of course, you can come back, but be sure to see multiple practitioners before deciding.
  • Don't settle. If it doesn't feel right, keep on looking.
  • Don't buy into the "It will be like a holiday" tag line. After surgery, you will be in no position to enjoy the sights. More likely, you'll be stuck in a hotel room trying not to think about the pain of recovery.
  • Traveling back home after surgery is risky especially for long flights where you must remain stationary. The chance of a post-op blood clot is definitely something to keep in mind.
  • It may seem cheap and easy at first, but don't forget to consider hidden fees and hassles you may have neglected including those associated with travel, return post-op visits, accommodations, dining, extra time you need to take off work, costs of bringing a helper along, travel insurance, visas and passports.

Plastic Surgery at Customs

Its also probably a good idea to worry a bit about border and customs agents when crossing international lines. If you have plastic surgery especially if it's facial plastic surgery, you could look much different than your passport photo when you return. I can see that causing a few headaches when someone who got plastic surgery in another country tries to get back in to her homeland.
